GitHub Copilot has the cheapest paid plan among AI coding assistants: Pro is $10 per month. There is also a Free plan and a free plan for verified students.
What does the Free plan include?
Copilot Free gives you 2,000 code completions and 50 chat requests per month (Copilot Edits included), plus agent mode and the Copilot CLI. Code review and the cloud agent are not included. That is enough to try Copilot or code a few sessions a week.
Free Copilot for students, teachers and maintainers
- Students: verified students get Copilot Student for free through GitHub Education.
- Teachers and open source maintainers: verified teachers and maintainers of popular open source projects may be eligible for free Copilot Pro.
Which plan should you pick?
- Learning to code or occasional use: Free, or Copilot Student if you qualify.
- Daily professional coding: Pro ($10) with unlimited completions – the best value plan.
- Heavy agent use, delegating to third-party agents (Claude, OpenAI Codex): Pro+ (100) is built for sustained agent-driven workflows.
- Companies: Business (39 per user) adds chat on GitHub.com and codebase indexing.
A note on AI Credits
Paid Copilot plans now include a monthly allotment of AI Credits for premium models and agent work, while regular inline completions stay unlimited. If you lean on agents, keep an eye on credit usage in your GitHub settings.
