| Hyphenate twenty-one to ninety-nine | 42 | Forty-two |
| US style: no "and" after hundred | 105 | One hundred five |
| British style adds "and" | 105 | One hundred and five |
| Groups of zeros are skipped | 1,000,005 | One million five |
| Dollars and cents | 1,234.56 | One thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty-six cents |
| Cheque style cents | 1,234.56 | One thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and 56/100 |
Writing an amount on a cheque or invoice
- Start with a capital letter and end with the currency: "One thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and 56/100".
- The amount in words must match the amount in figures. Copy the result instead of retyping it.
- Invoices for Vietnamese partners often carry both lines, "In words" and "Bằng chữ". The tool gives you both at once, with the Vietnamese reading rules applied correctly.

Frequently asked questions
Do you write "and" in numbers like 105?
+
It depends on the style. American English usually writes one hundred five, British English writes one hundred and five. Turn on British style in the tool if you need it.
How do I write cents on a cheque?
+
Write the dollars in words followed by the cents as a fraction of 100, for example One hundred twenty-three dollars and 45/100. Turn on Cents as 45/100 to get this format.
Which numbers need a hyphen?
+
Compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine, such as forty-two or seventy-five. Hundreds, thousands and millions are not hyphenated.
How large a number can the tool handle?
+
Up to 21 digits before the decimal point, which is hundreds of quintillions, and up to 9 decimal places. Digits are processed as text, so nothing is rounded.
How do I write an amount in Vietnamese?

The Vietnamese box applies the Vietnamese rules automatically, such as mốt for a final 1 after the tens and lăm for a final 5. For example 1,250,000 dong is Một triệu hai trăm năm mươi nghìn đồng.
