Tips for taking the photo with a phone
- Stand in front of a plain white or light wall, about 50 cm away so no shadow falls behind you.
- Use soft daylight from a window, facing you. Avoid ceiling lights straight above.
- Ask someone to take the photo at eye level from 1 to 1.5 m away. Do not use portrait (background blur) mode.
- Face the camera with a neutral expression, both eyes open, no glasses, hair away from the eyes.
- Take several shots and keep the sharpest. Leave some room around the head for cropping.
What this tool does not do
The tool does not remove or replace the background and does not detect faces: take the photo against the right background and line it up with the guides. Photo rules change, so always check the current requirements of the office you apply to. For US online renewals, the State Department also checks the digital photo itself.
The upload form limits the file size? Use the image compressor. Need your documents in one file? Use images to PDF.
Your photo stays on your device
- The photo is cropped and laid out in your browser, never uploaded to AX Tools 365 or anyone else.
- Downloaded files no longer carry EXIF data such as the GPS location.
- Nothing is kept: close or reload the page and the photo is gone.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a US passport photo?
+
Two by two inches (51 by 51 mm). The head, from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, must be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches, and the eyes between 1 1/8 and 1 3/8 inches from the bottom of the photo.
How many passport photos fit on a 4x6 print?
+
A 4x6 inch print holds 6 US 2x2 photos placed edge to edge, or 8 photos of 35x45 mm with a small gap for cutting. The tool lays them out for you, and you can choose fewer copies.
Can I print passport photos at home?
+
Yes, on a good colour printer. Download the A4 PDF and print it at Actual size or 100 percent, not Fit to page, ideally on photo paper. A 4x6 print at a pharmacy or photo kiosk is usually cheap and looks better.
Are my photos uploaded?
+
No. The photo is opened, cropped and laid out inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and the page keeps nothing once you close it.
Can it change the background to white?
+
Not yet. The tool crops to the exact size and adjusts brightness and contrast. Take the photo against a plain white or light wall.
